Standard PCB Design Process

1.Preliminary planning
Familiarize yourself with the product’s functional requirements and define circuit requirements and specifications, including shape, size, thickness, and number of layers.

2. Create schematic diagrams.
Create a schematic, which refers to the electrical level design of the board’s purpose and function. At this point, it is not yet a mechanical representation.

3. Create your PCB layout.
Once the schematic is complete, it is time to start laying out the PCB. This involves placing all the components on the board and routing the connections between them.

4. Design your PCB stack.
It is important to consider this early in the PCB design phase due to impedance, which refers to the amount and speed of current traveling along the traces. Stacking plays an important role in how mechanical engineers design PCBs and install them into equipment.

5. Define design rules and requirements.
This step is largely determined by the standards and acceptability criteria of IPC, the PCB and electronics manufacturing industry association. These standards tell you everything you need to know about PCB manufacturing. An important tip: Find a PCB layout supplier who is very familiar with IPC standards; this can help you avoid major modifications and project delays.

6. Place your components.
In many cases, customers and PCB suppliers will discuss design and layout guidelines when it comes to component placement. For example, there may be standards that indicate that certain components cannot be placed close to other components because of the electrical noise they create in the circuitry. the PCB supplier will have a datasheet for each component (in most cases these will be connectors) and will then place it on the mechanical layout and send it to the customer for approval.

7. Insertion drilling.

This step is driven by the components and connections. About half of the flex circuits on the market are double sided, which means they are connected to the underlying drill holes.

8. Wiring.
After placing the components and drilled holes, you are ready for wiring, which means connecting the parts of the path.

9. Add labels and identifiers.
Now is the time to add any labels, identifiers, markers, or reference indicators to the layout. Reference markers help to show the location of a particular component on the board.

10. Generate the design/layout file.
This is the final step in the layout process. These files contain all the information pertaining to your printed circuit board and once these files are generated, your PCB is now ready for fabrication, manufacturing and assembly.
